Education The Jim Hill Diversity Fellowship program honors the contributions of one of the Tennessee Aquarium's pioneering leaders, who advocated for diversity in all areas of the Aquarium's work.
The Jim Hill Diversity Fellowship is an 11-week, work-based learning opportunity at the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Its purpose is to help address the demographic disparities within conservation science careers by providing experience and equitable access to populations that have been historically underrepresented in these fields.
This experience will help guide and empower conservation-minded students to develop solutions to complex conservation challenges in our communities and gain valuable hands-on work experience.
The Tennessee Aquarium's history of providing students the opportunity to work and study alongside its staff has shown that such professional experience reveals new career options for students from all walks of life.
Selected Fellows will be paid a $14.
00 hourly wage along with campus housing and parking.
The Fellowship period is May 15 to July 28, 2023, and fellows must be available for the full 11 weeks.
Jim Hill Education Fellows will work closely with the Aquarium's award-winning team of professional educators.
Education Fellows should have a passion for engaging people in learning about science, animals, conservation, and the environment.
Fellows will primarily focus on helping to facilitate summer camp experiences for students.
Each fellow will have an opportunity to work with campers of different ages; reflect on how to engage different audiences through both summer camp and outreach; and learn how to evaluate programs in camp, outreach, and within the Aquarium.
Fellows will also have an opportunity to do a special project to write one or more programs as part of their work.
There is a multitude of possibilities for a valuable summer experience.
Key
Responsibilities:
Able to work indoors and outdoors in heat and humidity to take part in summer camp education for several weeks during the summer.
Creatively engage learners, primarily ages 5-14, in science, the environment, and conservation using a positive, professional, and inviting manner.
Willing to interact with and learn about education animals, including reptiles, amphibians, insects, and others, and how to present conservation messages about them.
Interest in learning more about surveys and other ways of evaluating programs and carrying out those evaluation methods.
Key Requirements:
College student with a science or education major Able to commit to the full internship of 11 weeks (May 15-July 28) Show a high interest in science, education, and conservation.
Able to lift and carry 50 pounds on occasion.
Responsible for own transportation from campus housing to the work location Seasonal, hourly; 36-40 hours/week from May 15 through July 28 (must be available for all 11 weeks); weekend and holiday work may be required; Fellowship includes University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus housing & campus parking; paid parking near the Aquarium during work hours.
